how internet names work

Internet names are just like Postal Addresses. I know that Joe lives at 352 Wallaby Street. So I write that on my package.

With the internet, you only need to know the name. Other objects called Routers, know the address [e.g. 16.153.42.23] and forward the "packets" of information to the address.

Sometimes, when you can't open a website, it is because the routers cannot find the address associated with that name. Typically this returns an HTTP 404 error code.
