apple

People often ask me if I am a "Mac Guy." I tell them that I am both, I like Macs for what Macs do, and I like PCs for what PCs do. Below is so invaluable software from Apple that gets used daily.

DVD Studio Pro 3
DVD Studio Pro is designed for advanced users who want to create longer or more complex DVDs than iMovie can handle. It comes with a full list of templates that streamline the creation process.

DVD Studio Pro is a must for any Mac user that wants to create DVDs with over 90 minutes of content.

Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD
Final Cut Pro is one of the main film editing software packages available. It has all the features of $10,000 packages at a fraction of the price.

I recommend Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express, the slimmer version, for anyone wanting to dive into digital video editing.

iDVD 5
iDVD is included with every new Mac purchased. It comes bundled in a package called iLife, where it plays a key role in taking the movies created in either iMovie or Final Cut Express and burning them to DVD for sharing with friends and family.

Since iLife comes with every Mac, I don't recommend buying iLife unless there are features that the newest version [version iLife '05] has that your current version does not.

iMovie HD
iMovie is the best consumer digital video editing program on the market today, period. I know that's a big statement, but that is how great it is. And to come bundled with 4 other equally fantastic applications for only $80, it is the must-have software package. Thank goodness is already comes on every Mac!

Since iLife comes with every Mac, I don't recommend buying iLife unless there are features that the newest version [version iLife '05] has that your current version does not.

iTunes 4.7
Download

[no updates]

iTunes is one of the best free music players around for both PC and Mac. With the largest collection of online songs for 99¢, you can't beat it. I install it on every computer that I setup for staff because it is that good.

I recommend Apple iTunes for everyone with a computer, especially over Windows Media Player.

dynamic playlists [itunes]

One of the best features of iTunes is the ability to create a dynamic playlist. Dynamic playlists [can] automatically update themselves so that you can have a playlist that is always up-to-date with your newest music.

amatuer editors [imovie]

For all those aspiring filmmakers out there, here are a two of most often made mistakes in movie creation by those just starting out.
1. When you make your first movie, one of the most exciting things is transitions between clips. However, most amatuers go transition crazy, using every transition only once or twice.
Use consistent transitions like headings in a book to break the movie into segments, rather than distracting viewers with unnecessary fluff.
2. Remember that much of the work in editing video can be avoided by
taping good footage to start with. Make sure you have a good microphone to use [not the camera's built-in mic] and that the light is coming from behind the camera instead of in front of it.
